The official currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR); it’s the dominant currency. All businesses are legally obliged to charge for their products and services in IDR. US dollar rates are still published mainly in hotels and for some activities. The price you have to pay finally will be calculated on the current USD-IDR exchange rate.
When using an ATM always make sure to put your hand above the keypad when typing your code. In more remote areas like Lembongan, you might not find a working machine. Visa and Master Card are most accepted. Bring some cash, your regular bank card and credit card. The maximum amount which you can withdraw from the ATM is either 1.250.000 – 1.500.000 at the machines with a 50.000 sticker or 2.500.000 – 3.000.000 at the machines with a 100.000 sticker. Depending on your bank fee between 2 and 5 US$ is charged. Nowadays Credit Card payment is possible in hotels, most restaurants and shops. But the more remote, the less likely it is. When you use a credit card a surcharge of 2 – 4% is applied.
Street vendors accept only cash, and it’s best if you pay in IDR. Bargaining with them is a must. But it’s also nice to respect and value their effort, work, and services. So make sure to pay fair prices.
US$, AUS$, EUR will be accepted changed almost anywhere. To exchange money, make sure to use official money changers. If the place looks dodgy and small, you should avoid it. They know many tricks and will give you less than you expected.
Even if many hotels publish their prices in US$, the actual payment is usually made in IDR. If you pay in a foreign currency, the exchange rate will often be terrible.
