English: the most common foreign language by far. Many Balinese people speak a level of English that allows them to communicate on a basic level with visitors. Yet many locals do not speak English. In hotels and restaurants you will have no problem if you speak English. In restaurants you will find the menu in English. Especially in restaurants in Kuta, Legian, Nusa Dua or Seminyak you can try your luck and ask for a menu in Japanese, Korean, Chinese or Russian. You can book tour guides who speak languages like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, French or German. They usually charge slightly more than tour guides who only speak English. Local travel agencies will help you with this.
If you’re able to speak a few words of Bahasa Indonesia, your Bali experience will change drastically. It will be way easier for you to bargain or tell a cab driver to switch on the meter. In Indonesia every island has its local language. The local language on the island of the Gods is called Bahasa Bali, but still, Bahasa Indonesia is the most common language and also the official language in Indonesia.
